The Initech new employee hiring packet artifact is designed to show an example of various topics that would discussed and/or documents distributed during new hire orientation. Our checklist gives a basic overview of what may be included in a packet given to a new employee. The section on the top right of the checklist shows a topics that would be addressed under the category of procedural orientation and the bottom right displays policy orientation. Chapter 8 (Tucker) discusses the importance of orientation in the workplace and based on research concludes that employees who attend a detailed, informative, and high energy orientation have a higher rate of retention, morale, and performance. The way a company chooses to approach orientating an employee could play a significant role in how well they are equipped to do their job and how loyal or committed they are to the company.
We also show a few sections of what would be in the theoretical employee handbook. We included a welcome letter, which would typically be the first main page in a hiring packet, and a company policy statement with a section regarding how disciplinary action is handled. The way a company expresses their policy or mission statement is important to be conveyed to the new hire. It gives them a feel for the organization they are now part of. How disciplinary action is handled is an important thing for a company to document also. In the event disciplinary action should be administered on an employee, having the procedure documentation available to the employee could reduce lawsuit risks.
Many other workplace documents would exist in a new employee packet. As discussed in chapter 14, Workplace Issues, there are many other topics to consider addressing to a new member of the team. How a company handles substance abuse in the workplace, discrimination, or harassment is important to make aware to the employee so in the event something arises involving these topics, they know what to do to solve the problem.
